Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses, has today expanded its in-person payment acceptance options for businesses in New Zealand with Tap to Pay on iPhone. Tap to Pay on iPhone allows merchants to accept all forms of contactless payments, including contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, using only an iPhone and a supporting iOS app — no additional hardware or payment terminal needed.

“As New Zealand consumers are continuing to adopt digital payments, we’re thrilled to introduce Tap to Pay on iPhone, giving businesses more ways to accept contactless payments and deliver a seamless and secure customer experience,” said Ben Hanna, Head of New Zealand, at Stripe. “With this easy-to-deploy technology, New Zealand businesses can now accept contactless payments from more customers, in more locations, and scale their operations rapidly.”

Start with an iPhone and Stripe Terminal

Whether it’s at a farmers’ market or table-side at a restaurant, Tap to Pay on iPhone provides more flexibility for New Zealand businesses to accept all types of in-person contactless payments using only an iPhone and the Stripe Terminal SDK. Merchants can use the Stripe Dashboard App to take their first payment.

At checkout, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their contactless credit or debit card, iPhone or Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology. Tap to Pay on iPhone also supports PIN entry, which includes accessibility options.

Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone technology uses the built-in features of iPhone to keep the business and customer data private and secure. When a payment is processed, Apple doesn’t store card numbers or transaction information on the device or on Apple servers.

A new way to enable unified commerce

Stripe customers can now use Tap to Pay on iPhone with an iPhone XS or later, running the latest version of iOS to implement a unified commerce solution that does not rely on traditional payments hardware. With unified commerce, systems and data are consolidated into a single platform, enabling businesses to unify their reporting, understand customer behaviour better, personalise experiences and recommendations, and reward loyalty. Leading mobile menu and ordering platform for the food and beverage and entertainment industries, me&u, and hair and beauty booking system Timely will be among the first businesses on Stripe to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone in New Zealand.

“We’re proud to collaborate with Stripe and pioneer mobile ordering and payments for businesses in New Zealand. As digital payment adoption increases in pubs and restaurants, we’re excited about tools like Tap to Pay on iPhone. These advancements enable us to offer our customers even more flexible options for growing their businesses,” said Kim Teo, CEO of me&u.

“We pride ourselves on making life better for people in the hair and beauty industry and are pleased to partner with Stripe to introduce Tap to Pay on iPhone to our customers,” said Stuart McLean, Managing Director of Timely. “This innovation makes taking payments easy and convenient for hair and beauty businesses of all sizes, from mobile operators to established salons. The client experience is everything to our customers, and Tap to Pay on iPhone creates a professional and seamless payments experience to match Timely’s beautiful booking system. With no upfront setup costs, it’s a cost effective payment option for our customers.”

“For over a decade, Australia and New Zealand businesses have trusted Stripe to create unified customer experiences across various sales channels. Tap to Pay on iPhone adds a new, efficient, and cost-effective tool to enhance that unified commerce model,” Ben added.
