Prepare for Safer Winter Travel Before You Set Out

Winter can be a challenging time for motorists and travellers, but a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping you safe,  comfortable  and on the move.

As the colder months settle over the country, changing weather can bring wet roads, fog, frosts and shorter daylight hours. Whether you  are commuting across town, heading over the hill, or planning a weekend away, it is worth taking a few extra minutes to make sure your  vehicle is winter-ready.

Start with the basics. Check your tyres for good tread and correct pressure, as both are essential for grip on damp or icy roads.

Make sure your lights are working, your windscreen wipers are in good condition, and your washer fluid is topped up. A clear windscreen  and good visibility can make all the difference on dark mornings and rainy afternoons.

It is not unusual to be held up so keep a few practical items in the car, van or ute, especially if you are travelling further afield. A warm  jacket, blanket, torch, phone charger, water and some snacks can be especially useful if you are delayed.

Before setting off on longer journeys, check the weather forecast and road conditions, and allow extra time so you are not tempted to  rush.  Winter driving is all about patience and awareness. Increase your following distance, brake gently, and take care on shaded roads,  bridges  and rural routes where ice can linger. If conditions are poor, consider whether your trip is essential or whether it can wait.

Travel habits can also change in winter, with more people relying on their vehicles for comfort and convenience. Regular servicing can  help  prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems, particularly with batteries, brakes and heating systems.

With the right preparation and a little extra caution, winter travel can be safe, smooth and stress-free.
