Auckland apprentice Bruce Wang, who works for JC Group, has gone from driving for Uber to being recognised as New Zealand’s top  drainlaying apprentice, achieving the highest exam mark in the 2024 certifying drainlaying exam.

His achievement earned him the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board’s prestigious Excellence Award, highlighting not just his  technical skill but also the resilience and determination it took to switch careers during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

“I’d always had an interest in hands-on work,” Bruce says. “Drain laying offered immediate practical experience, real job satisfaction, and  clear opportunities for financial stability and career progression.”

Bruce began his apprenticeship through Masterlink, who introduced him to Skills Group’s plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying training  business ICE (Industry Connection for Excellence). Coming from driving for Uber fulltime, the transition wasn’t without challenges.  Balancing long days on-site with evenings of study required discipline and resilience.

“The key was getting assessments done early, setting up a weekly plan, and using downtime to review notes,” he says. That determination  paid off, when Bruce achieved the highest exam mark in the 2024 certifying drain laying exam, earning him the prestigious   Excellence Award.

“It was a real surprise,” Bruce says. “The times I pushed through fatigue were worth it. Personally, it gave me a huge sense of  achievement, and professionally, it inspired me to keep raising the bar and contributing more to my industry.”

Bruce credits his tutor, Matthew Baylis, for playing a significant role in his success, “He supported me throughout my apprenticeship and  really helped me get to where I am.”

Looking ahead, Bruce plans to continue upskilling through further training and certifications, with his sights set on taking on more complex
projects and eventually moving into leadership roles.

For other apprentices, his advice is simple, “Ask questions and listen. Don’t be afraid to seek advice from experienced tradespeople. Most  are more than happy to share their knowledge if they see you’re willing to learn.”

Reflecting on his journey, Bruce says the most rewarding part has been seeing his own growth.

“At the beginning, everything felt new and challenging. Now, I can take on work that once seemed difficult and knowing the drainage I  installed will last for years gives me a real sense of pride.”

When it comes to winning the Excellence Awards, he says it’s a privilege to be recognised alongside other apprentices and tradespeople  from across the country.

“It shows the hard work and commitment I’ve put in is paying off.

“My experience with Skills Group has been supportive, motivating, and invaluable in helping me grow both personally and professionally in  my drain laying career.
